“Centered Tip Principle” for Chinese calligraphy writing

http://www.art-virtue.com/principles/p5-centertip.htm

Due to the tackiness and density of the gold pigment powder, I made a rare exception to the Center Tip Principle between 2:37 and 2:40. I overly pressed the brush’s bristle up to one half in consideration of the size of the brush and the ingredients of the gold powder. If the brush is pressed more than 1/2 or 2/3, the strokes will lose their vitalities.

Li Shu 隸書 Chinese calligraphy sample lesson #2 (why prefer older rubbings?)

chinese calligraphy Original rubbings ( 原拓 ) from steles of Chinese Calligraphy models are always preferred by well-trained Chinese calligraphers and teachers. The shape, structure, spirits of each characters as well as nuances are well kept; however, due to aging and Acts of God, steles deteriorated over the years and the calligraphy needs to be deciphered, understood, and analyzed for practice or appreciation.

2. Preparing new brushes
Soaking new brushes – Obeying the Centered Tip Principle 中鋒 is required in all stages of using Chinese calligraphy brushes for beginners and experienced calligraphers as well.

NOTE: The brushes sold with box sets have different levels of qualities. It’s best to consult experienced calligraphers for reliable resources. Some box sets have brushes that might make beginners of Chinese calligraphy unable to understand some calligraphic principles and achieve good writing results.

7. Brief view of Chinese seal chops
Chinese seals and their usages have special types of knowledge and sets of rules and taboos in Chinese culture, especially when they are applied in Chinese Calligraphy and brush painting. It’s not necessary for beginners to know the rules involved as shown below.

Chinese calligraphy lessons: 12. Brush pens

chinese calligraphy Here I talk about brush pens, their merits, and deficiencies compared to normal brushes. Brush pens are basically brushes with ink reservoirs and caps. The concept is good, but the execution is often bad. Brush pens’ writing quality is far below that of normal brushes. For now, students of calligraphy should still use normal brushes.

Chinese Calligraphy Scroll (High Definition) – Peace Love Joy 和平愛喜 with Signature

chinese calligraphy Reissued in High Definition with additional part of adding recipient’s name and artist’s signature. Chinese Calligraphy Scroll “Peace Love Joy (和平愛喜)”

Writing “Peace Love Joy” in cursive and semi-cursive Chinese Calligraphy for Katia from Russia during a Chinese music concert of Master Betty Zhang in McKinney Performing Arts Center in Texas. The writing was done on a pre-mounted blank scroll with printed dragons in light gold. Though the pre-mounted blank scroll can sometimes be wrinkled due to handling, the wrinkles can be removed with an iron. Like music performers trying to play correct notes, writing on a pre-mounted scroll can be risky since the Chinese ink cannot be changed. So I humbly asked the audience to understand and be as quiet as possible to avoid any distraction; otherwise, I lose the money and the scroll if a single stroke or any artistic detail has disappointed me.
First two characters ( 和平 ) mean peace; third ( 愛 ) love; last ( 喜 ) joy.

Multi-Purpose Chinese Calligraphy Brushes (Part 1)

chinese calligraphy http://cgi.ebay.com/10-CHINESE-CALLIGRAPHY-WATER-COLOR-BRUSH-/390278627445?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ade6b4075

These brushes made by Mr. Li Gang in China meet the criterion of good brushes – pointy, even, round, and resilient ( 尖齊圓健 ). These are the brushes I personally use for YouTube videos, teaching, and public events since 2007.

Mr. Robert Bo sold them at U.S. $1 each as of 2007-2008. The new imports (available in Janauary 2011) will be slightly higher in prices with more choices of products made by Li Gang.

The brush maker Mr. Li Gang ( 李剛 or 李刚 ) is a relative of the famous brush maker Zou Jielong ( 鄒節龍 or 邹节龙 ) whose reputation is highly esteemed in China. Their brushes share some similarities. (In China, many people have the same names as 李刚. So please don’t confused.)

I provide the info and writing videos as educational resources to acquire supplies and tools for Chinese calligraphy and painting.

Inquiry or direct order: Robert Bo (972) 758-7238 in Dallas, Texas and mention Li Gang’s brushes.

Due to Robert’s teapot business

http://shop.ebay.com/chineseteapotgallery/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

calling is the most convenient and fastest way to reach him. Robert will not know how to answer very specific technical questions regarding brushes.
For technical questions about Chinese Calligraphy brushes and other Four Treasures:

http://stores.ebay.com/Big-Teapot-Brush-Jade-Dress-eStore__W0QQ_fsubZ336676QQ_scZ1QQ_sopZ1

There are over 1,000 items not listed on Robert’s forbiddencity2008 e-Bay store. The best way to look for unlisted items, arrange international shipping, or purchase wholesale quantities is to call Robert between 12 – 8 PM, daily, Texas time.

Joshua Hough’s Disclaimer:
1. I do not guarantee the quality of each individual brush (brushes are all hand made “individually” – no productions by machines), nor the price changes and availability. Many Chinese schools in the U.S. have ordered large quantities of these inexpensive and quality brushes, so I am not responding to any availability issues.
2. I do not sell any of those brushes from my inventory.
3. I do not take commissions in any form.

I provide the information in this video solely for practitioners of Chinese calligraphy and painting to compare the selection and shopping of the supplies and tools.
